THE SITUATION
There is clear cut evidence proving that investment into sports in developing countries is far less in comparison to developed countries. Sport development is not a top priority for most developing countries nor does it align with the national budget or education system. Research has proven that a ‘vicious cycle’ is emerging as a result of the underdevelopment of sport in developing countries. Without significant investments in sport, it does not allow children or youth the chance to become professional athletes nor the opportunity to invest in themselves and improve on their skill set. For the lucky few that are born with natural talent, it doesn’t leave much opportunity for those individuals to continue their sport training or pursue professional sport careers in their home countries. Those that have the potential to become professional athletes will often pursue that path, which means leaving their home countries and moving to a developed country to start a new life. When there is a lack of talent-building opportunities, along with limited investment into local talent, this significantly limits any local sport development structures and sport career pathways for the chosen few that have what it takes to become a professional athlete.
The volunteer programs we offer will provide you with an opportunity to help motivation and leadership to young athletes in villages. Sport is a powerful tool for bringing communities together and promoting peace. Some programs train hundreds of young people, donate sports equipment and educate locals about HIV and AIDS. Sporting activities may include soccer, volleyball, basketball and netball. As a volunteer, you may be responsible to assist with the following duties: skills training at the regular training sessions, help organize games with different teams, fitness training with the teams, and work with staff to develop the managerial and organizational side of the team.
